NATA Launches Free, Industry-Wide Misfueling Prevention Awareness Training

This week, the National Air Transportation Association (NATA) released the Safety 1st General Aviation Misfueling Prevention Program – a free, online-based awareness program for pilots, line service professionals, FBO general managers and customer service representatives.

NATA, recognizing the need for an industry-wide misfueling prevention resource, developed the program to conform with standards from the Energy Institute and the NATA Safety 1st Operational Best Practices. The program consists of four different misfueling informational tracks, resources and certificates of completion.

NATA thanks the AOPA Air Safety Institute and the General Aviation Manufacturers Association for their assistance in producing this program. Additionally, the program was funded by grants from Eastern Aviation Fuels, EPIC Aviation, Phillips 66 and others.

The misfueling prevention program and additional resources can be found at www.preventmisfueling.com.

STUDENTS NO LONGER EMPLOYED

Q.  I have a student that doesn’t work at our operation any more. How can I take him/her off my training rosters, reports or All Students page?

A.  The Administrator has the ability to make any employee Inactive, which removes the employee from all rosters and the “All Students” page.

  1. After logging in as the administrator, click on the student’s name so it’s highlighted.
  2. Then, press the “Edit Student” button, select the drop-down status field and change from active to inactive, then save.
  3. To review or reactivate any student (while logged-in as the administrator) scroll to the far right of the page, change the drop-down selection to inactive. This page will show all inactive records. From here, you would follow step 2 (above) and simply change the status to active and save.

A New Award Recognizing Line Service Professionals

It has been 13 years since I started working as a line service technician and I can still remember the first time I heard my job referred to as a “ramp rat.” I was offended then and would still be offended today. The people I knew who worked on the ramp put in long hours often in less than ideal weather, and did so with an attitude of dedication and customer service. These individuals worked hard every day to provide the FBO’s customers the best possible experience whether they were based tenants, overnight guests or just a simple drop and go.

Because of these experiences, I am incredibly proud that NATA is adding to its list of Industry Excellence Awards a Safety 1st Certified Line Service Professional Award. This award will be given to a line service professional who demonstrates outstanding efforts to increase safety, service or business processes. The individual who receives this award will be recognized at the association’s annual awards luncheon along with the winners of the Airport Executive Partnership, Excellence in Pilot Training, FAA Service Excellence and GA Service Technician awards.

Across our industry, line service professionals make a positive difference every day.  This award will help honor more than just a single individual, I hope it will honor the hard work and dedication of line service professionals across the country and around the world!

Michael France

Director, Safety & Training – Former Line Service Professional

Nominations for the Safety 1st Certified Line Service Professional Award must be made by the NATA member company with which they are employed.

The Force Is With Them

What does NATA Safety 1st staff do when surrounded by 500 students? Give them light sabers and teach them how to marshal aircraft! We were very fortunate to have been invited to the launch of the Flying Classroom, a digital global flight curriculum designed to help students excel in Math, Science, Reading and other core subject areas. School children from Washington D.C. and Baltimore journeyed to Signature Flight Support at DCA for the Flying Classroom and Aerospace Career Fair. Students visited 27 aviation-related tabletop displays and heard from NASA Administrator Charles Bolden, Congressman Sam Graves, Fabio Alexander from Executive Aircraft Services and finally Captain Barrington Irving, founder of Experience Aviation.

Kim and I had a great time at this event! The children were interested and eager to learn about marshalling signals, including come ahead, left turn, right turn and stop (especially the emergency stop).

Who are your Managers?

Submitted by Michael France, NATA Director of Safety and Training

If your business is like most in general aviation, you promote from within. Individuals who display passion, knowledge and skill take on new responsibilities and eventually even new roles. Many of these “homegrown” leaders have never had formal leadership and management training, yet they are tasked with leading and managing your business. Their success is often based solely upon raw talent and desire. Imagine what these leaders and managers could accomplish with just a little bit of expert instruction!

The NATA Safety 1st Aviation Management Workshop is designed to provide these leaders, both new and experienced, the positive edge they need to take the businesses they run to the next level. Presented in partnership with Aviation Management Consulting Group (AMCG), the Aviation Management Workshop explores proven leadership, management, and decision-making principles, best practice approaches, innovative strategies, and creative techniques from industry experts who have decades of experience leading and managing people and making business decisions.

Now is the time to invest in your leaders and managers and the Aviation Management Workshop is the solution you need.

Trying Something New

So, the tough part about stepping out of your comfort zone is the uncertainty that accompanies that adventure. This year NATA Safety 1st stepped out of our comfort zone and moved away from large, centrally located training events and towards smaller regional training events held at airports. This really was a big step, I actually began my aviation career attending a more traditional NATA Line Service Supervisor Training seminar a number of years ago!

I am pleased to announce that our first Regional Advanced Line Service Workshop has sold out. Now, I do realize that doesn’t mean success all by itself, we still have to put on a great event, but it sure is a great start!

We appreciate our fantastic sponsors who make these regional workshops successful:  Beacon Aviation Insurance, TAC Air, World Fuel Services and AirBP. We would also like to recognize Jet Aviation St. Louis for hosting this workshop.

A special thank you to ServiceElements International who is both a sponsor and a presenter at the Regional ALS.

Stay tuned, we hope to be announcing more dates and locations for the Regional ALS workshops soon!
